Picking a moulding that suits the piece
Width, depth and finish — and why the frame should rarely be the loudest thing on the wall.

The moulding is the piece of the frame you actually see from the front, and its face width sets the visual weight of the whole thing. A 19mm profile disappears politely; a 50mm one becomes part of the composition.
Depth matters for a different reason. The rabbet — the lip that holds everything in — has to physically fit the stack of glazing, mat and backing. A deep-set piece or a thick canvas needs a moulding built for it, which is a buildability question rather than a taste one.
On finish, our default advice is to let the artwork lead. A frame competing with the piece it holds is the most common mistake we correct. Natural oak and walnut sit quietly behind almost anything.
The exception is a piece that is deliberately understated, where a more characterful frame supplies the presence the artwork intentionally withholds.
